Have you ever seen giant Sequoias? If you haven’t, just ask anyone who has seen them what they thought. You’ll see an immediate change in their facial expression followed by an emotional reaching into the past as they attempt to describe the incredible experience to have been surrounded by these ancient giants. They seem to be the 8th Natural Wonder of the World, but are they also a glimpse into our ancient past?
Let’s look at some fun facts about these monsters of the forest before we explore the tree’s significance to our origins:
- Fastest growing trees in the world.
- Bark as much as 4 feet thick.
- Branches 50 feet long and 100 feet off the ground.
- The trees have survived for 2,000 or 3,000 years - some even longer.
- Some of the largest trees measure 35 feet in basal diameter and up to 300 feet in height.
- The tallest standing giant sequoia is 311 feet tall and the tallest redwood is 367 feet tall.
- They can grow up to 1 to 2 feet tall per year until its between 200 to 300 feet high then, like people, they grow out, becoming the widest tree on Earth.
- They only grow naturally along the Western Slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in California, but they can also grow in many people’s backyards.
A Glimpse Into An Ancient World
They are the largest things on the face of the earth. They are a reminder of when many of the creatures of this world were once much bigger. We don’t often hear about when beavers were 450 lbs and 8 ft long, when dragonflies had 2 feet wingspans and...

tassel ferns soared 100 feet, but we can glimpse that world by looking at the Sequoias and Redwoods. It’s almost as if these trees have two parts to their trunks: one part sunk deep into the pre-flood soil some 5,000 ago and the other into our soil today.
But these trees represent more than scenery, it helps us see who we were once. Before the great Noachian flood we find a people who were like the Giant Sequoias 1) Long lived -up to 969 years 2) Tall giants - the Bible tells us that Goliath, who was a post-flood hold out in size, was nearly 12 feet tall according to the Royal cubit (6 cubits and a span). 3) Resilient to disease and decay. With such thick bark, almost impervious to wood destroying insects, and fire, do they indicate that man before the flood may also have had a greater resilience to decay and disease considering the average life span of 895 years. Some sequoias are so old they are nearly as old as the first trees reseeded shortly after the flood or 4500 years old.
Consider its cousin the “Methuselah” tree. There is a Bristlecone Pine that is estimated to be almost 5,000 years old. That makes this tree the oldest living thing on the planet! Feel a little of that inspired feeling we spoke about earlier? How would you like to experience that feeling every time you looked out your backyard window? Perhaps you’d like to commemorate “Arbor-Day or Earth Day or celebrate your own life with a symbol that best equates how we were once and how we will someday become again.
Bibleland presents to you a chance to grow your own Giant Sequoia tree. Create a piece of the ancient world in your own backyard with either a Sequoia, a Bristlecone Pine tree (Methuselah tree) or a Venus Fly Trap or purchase one for a plant lover near you. See our store for details.
Next time you plan a trip to California, take a tour among the earth’s last vestige of true giants and glimpse not only our past but also God’s promise of tomorrow.
